The Moon (2021)
Acrylic on canvas
200 x 94 cm

“The Moon and the Sun” is a series of two paintings which illustrate the intersection and relationship between time and between the light and the darkness. Gongkan believes that everyone inevitably experiences times of both light and darkness, ups and downs, which alternate throughout one’s life. The light and dark exist on opposite ends of the spectrum, yet like happiness and suffering, they must coexist together forever. We are not able to separate this duality, as it is like the “Yin and Yang” that creates a natural balance in life.

The artist believes that without suffering, we would not be able to see or experience the joys of life. By experiencing darkness or suffering, we are able to sit and reflect on ourselves. Therefore, these paintings represent the beauty and miracle of being able to get through dark times until we find light and happiness; it is something to look back on – to be remembered and appreciated.
