It Doesn’t Matter to Me (2021)
Installation of digital photography
30 x 300 x 300 cm

Gwaan ngo me si” is a colloquial expression in Cantonese which means “it doesn’t matter to me” in English. As the title of a work, it will lead the audience to a fictitious parallel universe. From a surrealistic perspective (an bird’s eye view), the audience will watch nine scenes of a drastically changing city and the people (figurines) living in the fictitious world. For lighting design, an illuminative device is set above to cast the shadows of the people on the city. Can they escape from the environment?

The installation work It Doesn't Matter to Me aims to reveal the indifference and short-sightedness of some people towards environmental changes in the process of globalization. They focus only on the present, ignoring the rapid development of their cities, whether it brings separation or integration.

The installation is put on the ground and offers 12 angles for appreciation – standing, crouching and lying down on the ground from four sides, which break the limit of watching from cameras. This work is in line with my other art creations, such as CityLink which was about the integration of Hengqin New Area and Macao. While this time, my work concerns the relationship between human beings and cities against the background of globalization.
