Critical Point (2020)
Inkjet print
Dimensions variable

Everyone can be a hero of their own life. When coronavirus, like a sharp knife, wounded our everyday life with a suspension, the sheen of countless ordinary individuals somehow radiates through this hiatus into our reality. The photographer Luo Xian launched a public photography project, entitled “Critical Point,” in May 2020, inviting some 200 candidates from all walks of social backgrounds and professions to participate in it through interviews, portraits, artistic group photos, and documentaries, offering these otherwise ordinary individuals a platform to voice their opinions. Through this project, the photographer observes and meditates on the impact of the pandemic on these people, as well as how normal people confront unknown and out-of-control situations and how they coped with anxiety. The participants brought to the shooting session their experiences and emotions they underwent during the pandemic. Amidst a surrealist, dark backdrop, they reinterpret their previous experiences together with the photographer through the form of performance art. In this fictional setting, ecstasy and melancholy, youth and death, and the enlightenment originated from life are being enlarged and reconstructed, fabricating a novel kind of memory of such reality.
