Liu Jianhua was born in Ji’an, Jiangxi Province in 1962. After his graduation as a sculpture major in 1989, Liu started his experimental work in the contemporary background. He put forward the concept “No meaning, no content” in 2008, then started to explore in a new direction. He created his own contemporary art style, thus became one of the most representative contemporary artists and one of the artists most prone to experiments in China. Liu has held many solo exhibitions at home and abroad, and was invited to many important international exhibitions, such as, the main exhibition VIVA ARTE VIVA of the 57th Venice Biennale, the 17th Sydney Biennale, the 2nd Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, the 1st Singapore Biennale, and the China Pavilion at the 50th Biennale di Venezia. He was also awarded multiple times, such as the Sculpture Artist of the Year by the 7th Award of Art China; the Asia Pacific Breweries Foundation Signature Art Prize 2014 by Singapore Art Museum and Asia Pacific Breweries Foundation, and so on. His works have been collected by institutions like Tate Modern and Victoria & Albert Museum in London. He currently lives and works in Shanghai, China.
