Peter Fischli & David Weiss

Year of Birth: 1952 / 1946
Country: Switzerland

Fischli/Weiss was founded by Peter Fischli (b. 1952) and David Weiss (1946 – 2012), who met in 1977 and began their artistic collaboration in 1979. Spanning a wide range of media, including sculpture, installation, photography and the moving image, their artwork has been the subject of many prominent solo exhibitions around the world, including shows at Aspen Art Museum in Aspen, the United States (2017); the Art Institute of Chicago and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), the United States (2017/18); Fondation Beyeler in Riehen, Switzerland (2016); the Serpentine Gallery in London, the United Kingdom (2014); the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, Japan (2010); among others. Their major solo show How to Work Better was presented at the Guggenheim in New York in 2016 and traveled to Museo Jumex in Mexico City in 2017. Peter Fischli and David Weiss have created sculptures, videos, site-specific installations, projections and photographs. Their broad conceptual and artistic oeuvre engages with the world of everyday life. With wit, subtlety, gentle irony and modesty, they question the mechanisms of artistic authorship, the value-added cycles of the art world, the symbolic value of artworks and the role of the viewer. Peter Fischli has continued the duo’s work alone since the death of David Weiss.
