The artist hails from Yuhuan, a fishing village in Taizhou, Zhejiang Province. Rapid economic development has driven a faster pace of life, and more people flowing to bigger cities, looking for a better living. In the process they have gradually forgotten customs and dialects of their hometowns. Using discarded fishing gear as the creative material and combining sound and bamboo arts, this work shows the traditional customs in the fishing village in a vivid, real life-based approach. Traditional tunes once popular are also incorporated in the sound installation to present, in an unusual, artistic way, local traditions in the artist’s home village in risk of extinction. The aim is to expose more people to traditional culture of the artist’s homeland and inject a new vitality to it.
