These life-sized bear sculptures are inspired by Pivi’s traumatic encounter with a polar bear years ago in Alaska. The works are first sculpted from foam and then decorated with coloured feathers, the softness of which gives a fluffy quality – an effort of the artist to modify the perception and feeling of fear to amusement. The work also illustrates the Venice Biennale 1999 Gold Lion Winner’s deep concern for the natural world and the vulnerability of animals.
