impromptu projects ltd 即興項目有限公司 (www.impromptuprojects.com) is a Macao based multidisciplinary studio practice founded by João Ó and Rita Machado. The work of the studio is focused on the design of ephemeral structures as well as on the study of their social relevance.

They propose a kind of architecture that is mindful of the territory’s current situation, aiming at the expansion of improbable public places with the involvement of the local community, institutions, organizations and faculties as critical participants in the urban space, using installations, events, and urban art as references.

Their work has been exhibited internationally, including as a representative of Macao at the 53rd Venice Art Biennale and the 14th Venice Architecture Biennale in 2009 and 2014 respectively. They were recipients of A’Design Award (2015-2016, Italy), International Design Awards (2016, Los Angeles) and 40 under 40 award given by Perspective Magazine (2008, Hong Kong).

Since 2016, the studio has been appointed to provide curatorial services to the newly established Taipa Village Art Space, showcasing the “never-been-seen” artworks from local talented artists under the cultural charm of Taipa Village’s colourful history and unique heritage. The annual planning aims to foster and nurture local and international new talents, so as to contribute to the cultural and creative industries in Macao.

Besides their main focus, the studio develops editorial work as publishers, exhibitions, event productions, consultancy and CGI modeling (computer generated imagery).
