For almost 5,000 years of civilization, ink has played a pivotal role in Chinese history. From writing to painting, ink has become a source and an indelible part of Chinese history. People use ink to express in different forms, to accumulate the wisdom and thinking of our predecessors, and ink has become an important cultural source of the Chinese nation. In today’s digital world, new perspectives and innovative technology along with a renaissance of creative forms of mediums, ink is reinterpreted while continuing the living heritage of ancestry with art and craft with culture.

This exhibition invites renowned multi-disciplinary contemporary artist Jennifer Wen Ma and international digital visual artist Yang Yongliang. Jennifer Ma uses the intrinsic connectivity and diversity of ink to present a large-scale multimedia and art installation of three gardens. “A Metamorphosis: No End to End” is a garden landscape bringing together natural, sculptural and virtual textures and an installation opera in one act “Paradise Interrupted” which was praised globally as the opening event of the 2016 Lincoln Center Festival in New York. Artist Yang Yongliang’s digital landscape painting is a breakthrough in the transformation of a classical Chinese ink, utilizing technology and photography. With the artists’ extraordinary creativity with traditional aesthetics in a modern scientific spirit, this exhibition Hua Yuan will take the audience through various realms of a conception of a landscape painting. The various flow in the space makes the participants become part of the landscape in an ink painting, and at the same time the artist becomes the witness to a dynamic ink painting.

There is no better moment than this milestone year for Macao and China. 2019 marks a double celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Establishment of the People's Republic of China and the 20th anniversary of the Establishment of Macao S.A.R. Enticed by the heritage of ink, MGM is destined to tell the story of our roots and source - the story of ink through an artistic and innovative experience.
