Yu Fan was born in Qingdao, Shandong Province in December 1966. He graduated from the Department of Fine Arts of Shandong University of Arts in 1988. He obtained his Master degree from the Department of Sculpture of the China Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1992. He is currently working and living in Beijing as a professor of the Department of Sculpture of the China Central Academy of Fine Arts.

Yu Fan’s art is obtaining artistic transformation and abstraction from not being restricted by external social reality, and his art is more about artistic autonomy and independence between external reality and internal art. Therefore, he has the tendency to think alone and never go with the mainstream, or a fantasy like Ivory Tower. Although Yu Fan is not an eye-catching one in the hustle and bustle of reality, and does not play the gallery with sharp or fierce. However, there is always something in his art, quietly carrying his point or resisting, and consciously ending something.
