Shinji Ohmaki (Japanese, b.1971) is a Japanese artist born in Gifu in 1971 and has been active worldwide as a contemporary artist. He is currently Associate Professor of Sculpture department of Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. Many of Ohmaki’s works address themes such as light and shadow, life and death and the natural world. All of his works are extremely minimalist or excessively flamboyant, without middle ground. On the other side, all his works have in common the technique of composition: the assembly of a multitude of tiny pieces for the creation of a huge show. His interest in Asian philosophy also helps him to realize subtle beauty of colours and materials, although such beauty is often neglected or destroyed in our contemporary life. He works thus on various media, from canvas to three dimensional installation frequently combining lights and moving air in the given space.
