Born Robert Clark, and originally from Indiana, Robert Indiana took his native state’s name after moving to New York in 1954. His decision to name himself after Indiana is seen as a gesture that presaged his Pop-inspired fascination with Americana, signage, and the power of ordinary words. Indiana’s work often consists of bold, simple, iconic images, especially numbers and short words like EAT, HUG, and, his best-known example: LOVE.
