Casino Lisboa is a famous landmark in Macao erected in 1970. In its half-century history, the edifice has accumulated layers of historical patina, glazes of cultural diversity, coats of individual debacles and good fortunes. It has also absorbed everything for which Macao has stood and been known since the early 17th century. It was called the “Venice of the Orient” and “Asian Babylon”. The city was defined by an explosion of many colors, different sounds, a spicy smell everywhere, crowded ports, and people gambling and bargaining. For more than three centuries, it was a major port for a sea route of Nanban trade and an entry and exit point to Europe, India, Africa, Americas and every possible corner of East Asia. “Babel Lisboa” was an initial construct to transform Macao into “Las Vegas of the East”, the top destination for gambling tourism and a major resort city.
