“Art Macao” is an international art event organized by the Macao Special Administrative Region Government integrating resources from various sectors in the S.A.R., aimed at congregating global creative forces to produce a city-wide signature biennale event. Renowned curator Qiu Zhijie is the chief curator of “Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2023”, which has adopted the theme “The Statistics of Fortune” to reflect on the expectations and concerns caused by the development of science and technology and explore the clashes and interactions between science and religion. From summer to autumn, through eight sections, namely the Main Exhibition, Public Art Exhibition, City Pavilion, Special Exhibition, Invitational Exhibition by Local Artists, Local Curatorial Project, Art Exhibition of Higher Education Institutions and Collateral Exhibition, 30 art exhibitions will be presented across the city, in a showcase of modern and contemporary masterpieces that are zestful and representative, by over 200 artists from more than 20 countries and regions, allowing visitors to experience the breadth and depth of art while at the same time embarking on a grand aesthetic journey. The objective is to raise to a new level the cultural and artistic atmosphere of Macao as a famous World Heritage city.
The Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from its Portuguese acronym) received a total of six artworks featured in “Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2023” which were donated by participating entities and artists. IC thanks the donors for their support of Macao’s cultural undertakings and affirms that the generous act of donation helps to enrich the collections of local museums.
“Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2023”, the mega international cultural and artistic event of the city, was inaugurated in July to bring together creative forces from around the world. Featuring a total of 31 art exhibitions in 28 locations across eight sections, namely the Main Exhibition, the Public Art Exhibition, the City Pavilion, the Special Exhibition, the Invitational Exhibition by Local Artists, Local Curatorial Project, Art Exhibition of Higher Education Institutions and the Collateral Exhibition, as well as 600 sessions of outreach activities, the event gathered over 200 artists (groups) and art institutions from more than 20 countries and regions, connecting the city with fantastic ideas from contemporary visual arts, developing the International Art Biennale into a brand, and infusing this World Heritage city with a new cultural tourism experience which is both profound and fun-filled. The event has attracted participation of around 16,000,000 spectators, recording the same compared with the first edition.
In the “Local Curatorial Project”, featured in the “Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2023”, four remarkable exhibitions, namely “The Typhoon of Destiny”, “Synchronicity – Topology of Mind”, “Revelation to __” and “The Secret of the Golden Flower”, have recently made their grand debuts, showcasing the keen exploration and creativity of local contemporary art. Admission to the exhibitions is free.
Organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC), co-organised by the Education and Youth Development Bureau, and with the support of the University of Macau, the Art Exhibition of Higher Education Institutions, featured in the “Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2023”, was inaugurated on 1 September, at the Museum of Art of the University of Macau.
“Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2023”, themed “The Statistics of Fortune” showcases modern and contemporary masterpieces by over 200 active and representative artists from more than 20 countries and regions. The Cultural Affairs Bureau will launch “Art Tours” and “Children Tours” during Art Macao. Schools, community associations and social service institutions are welcome to register for these tours. Seats are limited and distribution is on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Invitational Exhibition by Local Artists, featured in the “Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2023”, is currently held at the “‧ART Space” on the 1st floor of the Macao Cultural Centre, showcasing new works by six local artists, namely Konstantin Bessmertny, Ung Vai Meng, Lampo Leong, Chan Hin Io, Bunny Lai Sut Weng and Eric Fok Hoi Seng, on the theme of this edition of the “Art Macao” “The Statistics of Fortune”. The organiser held a press meeting today (29 July), where the chief curator Qiu Zhijie and the six artists met with the media to share their creative insights.
“Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2023”, the mega international cultural and artistic event of the city, was inaugurated with an opening ceremony held at the Macao Museum of Art (MAM) today (28 July), and the Main Exhibition and the Invitational Exhibition by Local Artists were unveiled simultaneously. A total of 30 art exhibitions across the city will open successively from July to October, allowing the public to experience the diverse cultural exchanges in the city and enhancing the cultural tourism experience while embarking on a grand aesthetic journey.

This year, the event has once again invited renowned artist Qiu Zhijie, the Vice President of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, to serve as the chief curator. He will host three lectures at the Auditorium on the 1st floor of the Macao Museum of Art, introducing to the participants the thoughts behind the curation process and the updates on the international art scene.
“Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2023” (hereinafter referred to as “Art Macao 2023”) will be held this summer. Under the patronage of the Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture of the Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region, the event is organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau and co-organised by the Macao Government Tourism Office, Galaxy Entertainment Group, Melco Resorts & Entertainment Limited, MGM, Sands China Ltd., SJM RESORTS, LIMITED and Wynn Macau, Limited. The selection results of the “Local Curatorial Project” in this event have been announced recently, and the four selected proposals are “The Revelations for X” (temporary name) proposed by MyLand Culture, “The Typhoon of Destiny” proposed by the “ART YIIMA” art group, “Synchronicity - Topology of Mind” proposed by Alice Kok, and “The Secret of The Golden Flower” proposed by Chang Chan. These four inspirational proposals will be transformed into four exhibitions, each to be held for a period of no shorter than eight weeks between September and November.
The mega international cultural and artistic event “Art Macao” returns this Summer, with the participation of the Government, enterprises, artists and the general public, jointly creating the cultural tourism brand of the “Macao International Art Biennale”. In particular, the six integrated resorts will participate in the event “Art Macao 2023” presenting various influential exhibitions and activities in a bid to jointly bring an immersive cultural atmosphere to the entire city as a gallery and an art garden.

Under the patronage of the Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao SAR Government, the event is organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, co-organised by the Macao Government Tourism Office, Galaxy Entertainment Group, Melco Resorts & Entertainment Limited, MGM, Sands China Ltd., SJM RESORTS, LIMITED, and Wynn Macau, Limited, with the participation of various consulates general of different countries in Hong Kong and Macao and a list of higher education institutions from Mainland China and Macao. “Art Macao” creates a co-production model in which Government, enterprises, artists and the public are involved in the participation to shape a new local cultural tourism brand, so as to develop Macao into a dazzling international platform for artistic exchanges and promote the development of “culture +”.
The “Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2023” (hereinafter referred to as “Art Macao 2023”) will be held this year. The Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym) calls for exhibition proposals of the “Art Macao 2023” Local Curatorial Project from today until 24 May. All individuals and associations engaged in contemporary art are welcome to participate.
