Since the founding of Macao, the city has been playing a historical role of multilingualism, trans-culturalism, integration and globalization. Cantonese, European and Southeast Asian languages, as well as the slowly evolving languages of the Macanese communities and the language of boat people, have all converged here, forming a "sea of languages". Since the handover, Macao has gradually formed an integrated society in which Chinese culture and language are the mainstay, while multiple cultures and languages co-exist. This exhibition takes “language” as its starting point, discussing the representation of language, the translation of literary language, referential and denotational aspects of language, and the relationship between vocal and written language, as well as conducting socially engaged research. Also, the participating artists respond to chief curator's theme from the perspectives of internal practitioners and external observers, in terms of the evolution of language, culture and life in Macao - some come to Macao to make a living, some come to Macao to settle down, and some come in search of trans-cultural experiences, these new immigrants and outsiders have all been contributing to the multi-cultural development of Macao society.
