The title of the work “League of Journeyers to the East” indirectly refers to a Hermann Hesse novel Journey to the East. The idea of the timeless intellectual sect borrowed from the book, is a clandestine league of pilgrims united in a search of the Ultimate Truth somewhere in the East.
The work consists of two parts: an oil and mixed media painting and a chessboard made of marble in front of it. Canvas is organised as an intellectual labyrinth with two chess puzzles depicted in the middle. One of which is the last move of Immortal Game, and both games have queen’s sacrifice, presented as an allegory.
The rest of the canvas is organised around chessboards with situations, signs, symbols and characters borrowed from alchemy, mathematics, astronomy, geometry and history in a manner to construct a mental pendulum, solving of which might help the inquisitive viewer to resolve the mysteries of the Orient and might help to eventually arrive to the point of Ultimate Truth.
