A brand-new urban cultural tourism brand is taking shape, prepared to generate a huge mass fervour for contemporary art in Macao. “Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2021” is back from July to October 2021. Government departments, enterprises together with artists from all over the world will bring diverse visual arts experiences under the theme “To Create for Well-being”. “Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2021” is divided into several sections: Main Exhibition, Special Exhibition of Resorts and Hotels, Public Art Exhibition, Creative City Pavilion, Selected Works by Local Artists and Collateral Exhibition, among others. By gathering creative ideas from around the world, it aims to promote the reputation of Macao as a world heritage city and reshape the humanistic spirit in the post-epidemic era. Curated by Professor Qiu Zhijie, one of the most influential contemporary artists in China and Dean of the School of Experimental Art of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, the Main Exhibition, themed “Advance and Retreat of Globalization”, is divided into three parts: “The Dream of Mazu”, “Matteo Ricci’s Labyrinth of Memory” and “Advance and Retreat of Globalization”, providing a space for reflection and discussion on globalization and individuality, life and dream, remoteness and proximity, security and happiness, among others. The Main Exhibition also echoes the geographical and cultural identities of Macao, and triggers an in-depth dialogue between local and external artistic concepts in the globalization process. Laying on the longitudes of different cities and in the latitudes of creativity, “Art Macao” not only hosts international masters and local celebrities, but also attracts the participation of prestigious cities such as Macao, the City of Gastronomy; Nanjing, the City of Literature; Wuhan, the City of Design; Linz, the City of Media Arts. Whilst point of convergence of unique cultural essences originating from various creative cities, Macao will once again become a great garden filled of artistic creativity. From July to October this year, Macao will connect the whole world with creativity and allow the public to enjoy beauty and vividness. The mega cultural and artistic event “Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2021” was launched in July. With a chief curator mapping out this year’s Biennale for the first time, the event is divided into several sections, including the Main Exhibition, the Special Exhibition of Resorts and Hotels, the Public Art Exhibition, the Creative City Pavilion, the Selected Works by Local Artists and Collateral Exhibition, among others, fully utilizing the urban characteristics of Macao’s integration of Chinese and western cultures and its geographical advantages, bringing an immersive cultural atmosphere to the entire city as a gallery and an art garden, and establishing a signature brand of cultural tourism at an international level. “Art Macao 2021” features a total of 30 art exhibitions in 25 locations, as well as approximate 800 sessions of outreach activities. It drew over 450 artists/art institutions from 36 countries and regions and attracted over 3.2 million spectators despite the pandemic.
The Public Art Exhibition of the spectacular event “Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2021”, themed “Technology of Well-being”, allows the audience to feel the tension and beauty in art through close contact with the artworks, bringing an immersive cultural atmosphere to the entire city as a gallery and an art garden. The last public artwork of this edition of “Art Macao” – a large-scale sculpture “Chakra” by Italian artist Riccardo Cordero, is now on display at Tap Siac Square.

The Public Art Exhibition of “Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2021”, themed “Technology of Well-being”, aims to encourage people to explore the meaning of happiness. Several distinctive artworks are exhibited in public spaces of the city, in combination with other sections of “Art Macao” to bring an immersive cultural atmosphere to the entire city as a gallery and an art garden. The public artwork “Gathering” is now on display in the Art Plaza of the Macao Cultural Centre, where the public can navigate between the adjacent mega panorama “Learning from Macao” and the Main Exhibition at the Macao Museum of Art in an art tour destination in the coming autumn.
“Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2021 - Selected Works by Local Artists” will be held from 29 August at the Former Municipal Cattle Stable, featuring a total of 12 pieces/sets of selected works, including paintings, three-dimensional installations, sculptures, photographs and other outstanding works. The assessment process of “Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2021 - Selected Works by Local Artists”, jointly organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, the Macao Government Tourism Office and various entities, was successfully completed on 4 June. After a rigorous review by a commission formed by 11 members from different sectors, a total of 12 pieces/sets of works were selected, to be exhibited at the Former Municipal Cattle Stable in August.
